Friday Roundup: Pavonine, Alldressedup & Opening Ceremony/ACE Hotel

My friend from LA started a clothing line called Pavonine with her sister & another friend last year, and they've been having great response to their line so far. It's already been picked up by many specialty boutiques in LA & NYC & revolve.com. And now, they've just been picked up by Urban Outfitters, where several of their cool dresses & tops are selling exclusively online at Urban Outfitters, retailing around USD$128-$188. How great is that! I'm amazed at their wonderful success for such a new and young clothing line.

I also read on Urban today that the Singapore label Alldressedup has been picked up by Anthropologie in the US. They will be selling bags from Alldressedup's FW2010 collection both online and in their retail stores. These retail around SGD$679.
I'm always excited when our local brands get spotlighted overseas.

Hmm, this also makes me wonder what kind of marketing/merchandising strategy URBN Inc, the parent company of both Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters is pushing for?The inclusion of these 2 higher priced brands are shifting prices up from their lower ranges in these stores.

Opening Ceremony now has an Opening Ceremony-Ace Hotel shop-within-a-shop on its website. Carrying quirky items that are found in the OC gift shops at the actual Ace Hotels like Band of Outsiders pjs, keds for opening ceremony sneakers, a travel kit emblazoned with the Opening Ceremony logo, you can now buy all these items online, even if you haven't stayed at ACE hotel in Palm Springs, Portland, Seattle, or NYC. Cool cool!

What to Wear: The Rainiest Day of Summer

"Everyone's got the message but me. Rubber boots, and high tops, and skirts below the knee. Everyone's got the message but me. So why am I still laughing? Why am I still laughing?"
so sings Elizabeth & the Catapult on one of their tracks 'The Rainiest Day of Summer'.

With the crazy summer weather everyone's been having, dressing up has become a matter of functionality. Having just missed awful typhoon weather in Hong Kong and lousy overcast weather in Singapore, I was really lucky to have sunny skies during my trip. It's been flooding everywhere in Asia, but extremely hot in Europe and NYC, I hear. And when you have rain in the summer, it seems we are always the most unprepared for it.

So thought I'd do a post on what to wear during a rainy summer day - I'd probably stay away from rubber boots though, because somehow they are very hard to pull off. More often than not because you come away looking like a washing lady in Asia. I'd probably opt for some more fashionable jelly/rubber sandals, easy layers and shorter hemlines that would work for rain or hot weather. And of course, some cute umbrellas to start with!

Option 2:

Tank by Urban Outfitters, Anorak by Urban Outfitters, Cropped Pant from Express, Jelly shoes from Vivienne Westwood for Melissa

Option 3:

Dress from Victoria's Secret, Necklace from Monsoon, Tie-back Jelly Sandals from See by Chloe

Julianne Moore for Bulgari 2010

So I finally got to watch Chloe the movie, which featured Julianne Moore, Amanda Seyfried and Liam Neeson in a love triangle. I swear Julianne keeps getting better with age! But I had this other picture of her in mind, you know the ad from Bulgari, with her deep burgundy colored hair, half covered in expensive swathes of fabric, lying amongst some lovely velvet throw cushions, and yes holding a cockatoo or two. It's not hard to imagine her as the same character in the movie, the hidden sensual side of Julianne Moore.

No wonder I was delighted when I saw the next photo campaign for Fall Winter 2010 Bulgari on designscene.net. How can I say this - I'm a sucker for photoshoots based on a series. Time to start collecting tearsheets! You never know when you'll need to pull this tearsheet out years later so that you can reference back to this point in time, or look or colour. I'm not sure that I'll want to buy the bags in the advertisement, but I'm definitely sold on the image!

Style Icon: Sookie Stackhouse/ Anna Paquin

Although we're only getting Season 2 of True Blood here in Singapore, I am an avid fan of the TV series, and even more so of the main character Sookie Stackhouse. Living in Louisiana, Sookie and her friends perfect the art of making simple summer sundresses look amazing, thanks to some behind-the-scenes tailoring of course. If I were doing a blog post about summer sundresses, she would be the style icon I'd be inspired by.

Sometimes it's hard to know where the identities of Sookie Stackhouse and Anna Paquin start and end. While trying to find photographs of Sookie, I came across even more amazing images of Anna in real life.
Off-screen, Anna Paquin may be more dressed up, but she still embodies that feminine quality with a sultry edge. And she doesn't forget the rule of great tailoring even when wearing designer pieces at red carpet events. Both girls are definitely great style icons in their own right.

Resort 2011 Recap: Top 3 best shows

I thought these 3 lines for Resort 2011 should deserve some special mention:

1) Balenciaga:
Fantastic use of prints & colour in alien-like combinations that only Balenciaga could come up with.

2) Vena Cava:
Girly vacation style, for lack of a better word: very refinery29.

3) Jason Wu:
Somehow I can just imagine Michelle Williams wearing this- very pretty, clean and feminine.

Obsession du Jour: Resort 2011 Orange

I am obsessed with this colour lately, which is unusual because my favourite colour is usually black. But it showed up all over the runways for Resort 2011 at Derek Lam & Vena Cava and I just had to point it out. All my photos of late are of me wearing clothing in this colour. Wear it with pale green (another current colour obsession), white or stripes for summer. I'm in LOVE!
