How To Wear: Crop Tops, Bandeaus & Lace Bras

As the thick of summer approaches and the weather gets hotter and hotter, it's time to try these cool trends.

1) Crop Tops
Pair them with high waist bottoms - skirts, shorts, peg leg pants. The skill is in finding a pair of bottoms that, when worn together, only lets you show the right amount of skin to flatter your figure. Or you can skip that altogether by layering with a longer tank top inside.

2) Bandeaus
If you're more daring, you can try wear bandeaus as a top with a flared skirt a la Urban Outfitters. Or for a slightly more conservative, combine them with a cardigan and skater skirt. To be even more conservative, I'd probably wear this at the beach resort.

3) Lace Bras
These serve as a nice contrast of lace for low cut tanks, sheer tanks or tanks with large armholes. You know you probably have too many of those.

Dump Trucks, Junks, & Colours...Oh My!

Was in Jakarta the past week, and noticed how delightful the colours of all the trucks on the road were. In Singapore, vehicle colours are often some god-awful pink and all colours of the rainbow that never match, but in Jakarta, the cabs, cargo holds, containers and even the undercarriages of the trucks were all painted in complementary colours - muted greens, bright oranges, bright blues and pale yellows etc.

It was a pleasant aesthetic to have in an otherwise smoggy city. They also reminded me of these images I'd found searching for junks in Ha long Bay in Vietnam.

Just perfect colours for Rag & Bone's Resort 2011 collection.

Trend spotting: Desert Style at Coachella Music Festival

Via Style Hunter
{{ Finally, my little blog post about Coachella desert fashion was posted on Stylehunter}}

It’s the week back from Coachella music festival in California, and all the blogs are abuzz with fashion sightings at the festival.
With great lineups like Deadmau5, LCD Soundsystem and Hot Chip, Coachella continues to draw a fashionably hip and international crowd each year who come not just for the music and parties, but also to be seen. Fashion has evolved from the craziest, most outrageous get-ups to the more laidback girl who goes thrifting or shops at Urban Outfitters. Still, be it hippie boho style, floral dresses or distressed denim, the desert with its high temperatures can be a great leveller when it comes to comfort and practicality in fashion. Fortunately, these fashionable girls below show us just how to combine practicality with style. And with the equally warm climate in Singapore, we can easily adapt these desert fashion styles to suit our own.

Fashion shows: Audi Fashion Festival, Blueprint & Tokyo Girls Collection

Managed to catch the Mango show at the Audi Fashion Festival as my friend C got tickets to the show. Also attended the Blueprint trade show at the F1 pit building, which was pretty impressive. I did not expect that many labels to be there, and the overall quality of the show was up there. Hopefully, they will be able to get more South East Asian designers to participate in the future shows.

However, what really struck me about the Mango fashion show was the scene in the Mango store after the fashion show. There were many customers who were so excited by the clothing they had seen in the show that they went straight out to buy it afterwards. As the clothing shown on the runway were of current collections in the stores, customers had instant access to their desired purchases! A total win-win for the customer and the retailer.

It isn't like this concept is new, but I think Singaporeans still tend to think that runway shows are more for haute couture or expensive designer labels. One fashion capital that has really perfected this concept of the current collection fashion show is probably Tokyo. Twice every year, popular domestic fashion brands come together to host the Tokyo Girls Collection. Japanese brands like Alba Rosa, Beams, Ravijour that are often featured in domestic magazines like ViVi and S Cawaii are showcased on the runway, and items shown are available for purchase from your seat via mobile phones. Talk about "fast fashion". I foresee inventory turnovers skyrocketing.
